Talking to your designer doesn’t have to be a scary, insurmountable task… when you shift your perspective from it being a burden to becoming a brand discovery journey, you’ll enjoy it more. I know corny… but it’s true!

Communication is becoming a lost art but once you master how to communicate effectively with different types of professionals it only elevates your business acumen… creatives included!

Number One: Vet your prospective designer.

Some of the miscommunication you face comes from picking the first person recommended to you. did you look at their design portfolio? Did you ask them questions based on your specific needs to see if they were a good fit? Do you like their previous work? Have you seen any of their previous work? Did you ask for a consultation before you hired your logo designer? If you didn’t do any of these things, don’t be shocked when communication isn’t going well between the two of you. You have to do your due diligence before you can choose the right designer!

Number Two: Be Thorough in your Communication

If you dislike your design proofs, guess what? Say so! You’d be surprised the number of people I have who come to me and tell me they didn’t like their proofs from the designer they’re working with on a project and ask for advice. It’s ok to say, “Hey, for me these missed the mark and I’d like to either part ways in this process” or “I like these but I’d like to possibly move in a slightly different direction? Can we have another meeting for clarity?” Just saying “I don’t like this” or even “love it!” with no context doesn’t help your designer or you move forward in getting closer in finding your perfect design.

Number Three: Be Open Minded about the Process

Even if you are thorough in selecting designers to work with, design is subjective! It’s a form of art and everything isn’t for everybody. You might have to sift through a few designers before you find a design that works for you and that’s perfectly ok. A solid logo and brand design is the foundation to your business and not something you want to rush through. Remember that an expert brand and logo designer will know the fundamentals of a good versus a bad logo so be sure to listen; you paid them for their expertise! This is also a part of being open minded; embrace what you don’t know and be willing to learn through the process. It will only help your business in the long run!
